Rivian’s EV factory in Normal, Illinois has accumulated 16 serious violations in just 21 months, according to reports from Bloomberg and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Workers have suffered injuries ranging from amputated fingers to severe back lacerations, with one worker even vomiting “Rivian blue” bile after painting without proper protection. The company, which operates only one factory, has accumulated more violations in this time frame than larger automakers like Honda, Volvo, and Ford. Allegedly, there are many unreported injuries, with one worker experiencing severe symptoms after being forced to paint without a respirator until vomiting blue bile. Despite these reports, Rivian claims that worker safety is a priority and that safety equipment is provided, with the option for employees to report concerns anonymously. However, with OSHA monitoring closely, the company may need to do more to protect its workers, especially as it continues to hire more employees and faces uncertainty regarding unionization. Additionally, Rivian has halted plans to build its R2 SUV in Georgia, choosing to focus on the Normal, Illinois plant instead.
