A relatively minor skirmish over money has escalated to threaten the entire Android ecosystem as chip firm Arm moves to cancel Qualcomm’s license to use its chip design standards. Back in 2021, Qualcomm acquired an AI chip company, Nuvia, which was also an Arm licensee. Arm claims that Qualcomm never sought its approval to transfer those licenses, resulting in a lawsuit in 2022. The battle is set to go to trial in December, but unless a resolution is reached, Qualcomm’s ability to manufacture chips, the foundation of its multi-billion dollar business, will be jeopardized. It is likely that a settlement will be reached before the license is withdrawn, allowing both companies to go back to coexisting peacefully. In other news, a Boeing-made satellite has exploded in Earth’s orbit, breaking into multiple pieces and posing a risk to other satellites. Additionally, the stress-inducing TV show “Severance” is set for a second season, while Tesla promises to launch more affordable EVs in the near future. Moreover, TSMC has stopped shipments to a client suspected of supplying chips to Huawei in violation of sanctions.
