LinkedIn is facing a €310 million ($334 million) fine in the EU after the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) determined it had improperly conducted behavioral analyses of its members’ personal data for targeted advertising, violating the GDPR. The DPC ordered LinkedIn to collect all data in a compliant manner, emphasizing the importance of processing personal data lawfully. The decision follows a 2018 complaint by French non-profit La Quadrature Du Net, with an inquiry into LinkedIn’s data processing practices transferring from the French Data Protection Authority to the DPC due to LinkedIn’s European base in Ireland. In response, a LinkedIn spokesperson stated they believed they were in compliance with GDPR but are working to align their advertising practices with the DPC’s ruling.
